Verona city guide and tourist informationVerona is one of the most ancient and beautiful cities in Italy. It is called "the door to Italy" because of its excellent weather and geographic position, in the middle of the main Italian and European lines of communication.
Verona is a beautiful city, rich in natural resources, famous monuments, beautiful landscape and it is also an important cultural and touristic resort.
Another reason for the tourist to choose Verona is the charme that the famous Shakespearian tragedy gave to this city: in fact Verona is "the city of Romeo and Juliet".
There are no detailed informations about the origins of Verona: we only know that the first human groups being in the place where later was built Verona arrived during the prehistoric age. In the I century b.C. Verona was an important Roman colony and of thaat period we still have some testimonies, such as some romanic doors, bridges, the Amphiteatre, the reticular structure of the historical centre and so on.
As regards to culture and art, Verona achieved its best period at the time of the free cities (XII century) and it still is an important place for artistic and cultural activities. |
