How easy is it to travel from Rome to Pompeii by public transport? How long does it take and is there accommodation nearby? We are planning a holiday in Rome in August (2 adults plus 1 child) and would like to extend this with 2 or 3 days in Pompeii/Sorrento area, before returning to Rome for flight home. Any advice would be gratefully received.

You can go to Naples by train (2hrs)

Is it expensive to take a trip to the city of Pompeii? I've always wanted to see this city, preserved from a volcanic eruption that happened centuries ago. I always thought it would be really expensive because it's such a popular tourist attraction in all of Italy. How much should I expect to spend to see the entire city of Pompeii?

It's not expensive to travel from to Pompeii.
