San Carlo Theatre: Naples city guide
The Saint Charles Theatre, ordered by King Charles of Bourbon during his reign, is the second theatre in Italy after the Scala in Milan and it is also one of the most famous and important lirical theatre in the world.
The building was realised in just eight months in 1737 and it was opened to the public the same year on the occasion of the king's name-day. It was subsequently modified and adorned; in 1816 the hall was completely destroyed because of a fire, but the restoration works were very quick and the theatre was given back to the city during the same year.
The theatre hall can contain up to three thousands people and it has lots of gold decorations, that don't spoil the sober elegance of the whole structure.
The imposing royal box is surrounded by others 184 boxes divided into six levels and adorned with some rich balaustrade. The vault has a fresco representing Minerva and the most important greek, latin and italian poets.
The hall of the Saint Charles Theatre is famous all over the world also for its perfect acoustics.
