San Francesco di Paola: Naples city guideIn front of the Royal Palace, on the other side of Plebiscito Square, there is the imposing S.Francis of Paula's basilica, characterised by a big semicircular arcade composed by Doric columns. It was ordered by Ferdinand the Ist of Bourbon in 1817 to thank the Saint for obtening the reign again in 1815 May,20.
The church was realised by Pietro Bianchi, that took his inspiration from the Roman Pantheon as regards to the architecture of the basilica, covered by a big dome placed on an imposing tambour. In front of the dome there is an elegant pronaos placed on six central columns and two side-pillars: over the pillars you can see a triangular tympanum with the staues of the Religion, S.Ferdinand of Castile and S.Francis of Paula.
Once you crossed the entrance-hall you arrive to the beautiful internal rotunda, surrounded by a colonnade composed by 34 marble Corinthian columns and pillars. The big space is closed by the dome, that rise up to 53 metres from the floor.
The high altar, situated in front of the entrance, was realised with a precious stones decoration in the XVII century for the Saint Apostles'church and later it was moved there.
The internal walls of the basilica have eight statues representing also the 4 Evangelists and S.Francis of Paula receiving charity from an angel. |
