S.Gennaro Cathedral: Naples city guideThe S.Gennaro Cathedral was ordered by Charles the IInd of Angiō and it was opened in 1315, on a place where previously existed the Stephanie cathedral. The original gothic shape was modified many times from the XV century to the beginning of the XX century.
The main front is the result of a modification that took place between the XIX and the XX century, while the three doors were part of the original structure, realised in the XV century.
The internal part of the cathedral is latin-cross shaped, it is divided into three aisles by sixteen pillars including a hundred ancient marble columns on which are placed some smart pointed arch. The central aisle is covered by a beautiful wooden roof of the XVII century, adorned with some gold decorations and some engravings; the side-aisles are covered by some cross vaults.
Inside the cathedral there are the famous phials containing S.Gennaro blood that, twice a year, (in May and in September), liquefies because of an ancient miracle started during the age of Constantine. On the occasion of that miracle, that is of good omen for the city, hundreds of Neapolitans go to the cathedral to pray together for the Saint.
Inside the cathedral, where you can see the original gothic structure with some roman elements, there are some precious works of art. The baptistery is covered by a dome with lots of remains of some mosaics realised in the V century, the date of its foundation. |
