Fuorigrotta: Naples city guideFuorigrotta quarter begins at the entrance of the IV Days Tunnel, bored in 1940 for one km under the hill of Posillipo.
This quarter developed between 1950 and 1970 and nowadays it is thickly peopled, full of modern blocks, divided by some big roads that the urban planning of that period tried to integrate with the surrounding environment and to camouflage with some plants and flower-beds.
The main attraction of the quarter is the S.Paul stadium, a big sporting unit opened in December 1959; but Fuorigrotta is famous also for the Mostra d'Oltremare (Overseas Exhibition), a big area realised in 1939-1940 to show the successes of the Fascist Italy in Africa colonies.
After the Second World War it was rebuilt to became a larger area: nowadays it is composed by 20 pavillions for exhibition, several theatres, an olimpyc swimmingpool, some tennis courts, several botanical greenhouses and a large multifunctions playground. |
